description
Statkraft AS is one of Europe’s leading providers of renewable energy, as well as the Nordic region’s third largest and Norway’s largest electricity generator. Statkraft focuses on innovation with a clear ambition to deliver energy solutions for the future. The Group generates hydropower, wind power, district heating and gas power. With special expertise within physical and financial power trading, Statkraft is a major player on Europe’s power exchanges.
Hydropower
A huge reservoir capacity and easily adjustable output levels make Statkraft’s hydropower resources a flexible and efficient source of energy. Statkraft’s hydropower output in 2006 was 41.5 TWh.
Statkraft also focuses on hydropower outside the Nordic region, for example in southeast Europe.
In addition to establishing its own production, Statkraft invests in power production together with other companies. Its aim is to identify new opportunities for power generation and cooperation within energy trading. This provides a platform for further growth in Europe.
Through SN Power, in which Statkraft has a 50 percent shareholding, Statkraft invests in hydropower projects in growth markets outside of Europe.
Gas Power
Europe’s power markets are undergoing fundamental changes, driven by two key factors; climate challenges and security of supply. At the same time, a growing demand for electricity and the decommissioning of old power plants creates a need for new generating capacity. Statkraft put its first gas-fired power plants in Germany and Norway into production in 2007.
Wind Power
Statkraft is the leading generator of wind power in Norway and is also involved in the development of wind power facilities in the United Kingdom. Statkraft’s ambition is to develop 2.25 TWh of additional wind power in Norway and a further 2.5 TWh outside Norway by 2015.
In 2009, the Statkraft’s first wind farm in the UK may be ready for operation in South Wales. Statkraft has applied for several other concessions and has part ownership in other wind power projects in the UK.
Power Trading
Statkraft has long been a major and active player on the European energy exchanges. Statkraft’s ambition is to seize opportunities in a market that demands environmentally friendly energy, and to contribute to a more sustainable energy supply through increased generation and sales of pure energy.

Over several years Statkraft has developed a unique business concept and competitive advantage by combining the efficient employment of flexible hydropower with physical and financial trading. Expertise built at the intersection of these skills creates added value and reduces risk. This expertise provides the platform for the trade offices in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf and Sofia. Trading on the European continent supplements the extensive trading activity in the Nordic region.
