Norwegian Ammunition Disposal Company AS (NAD) disposes of highly explosive ammunition and other energetic materials. The company was founded in 1990, was licensed to operate in 1992, and started demilitarization work in 1993. NAD is owned partly by Salvesen & Thams and Orkla ASA, and partly by Nammo AS.

Unique Facilities
NADs unique ammunition disposal method has been developed and documented in cooperation with major research institutes, including SINTEF and Det Norske Veritas. The company is ISO 9001 certified, and the disposal process is carried out in its own facilities, which lie 700?1,000 m underground. Most disposal activities take place at approximately 850 m below ground or approximately 550 m below sea level. This unique setting ensures maximum safety and minimum impact on the environment.

Environment-friendly
NADs disposal process starts with an environmental impact assessment, and as many parts as possible are recycled. The remains are disposed of as hazardous waste and treated by authorized companies. NAD itself demolishes explosive components in chambers more than 900 m below ground and filters gas through large water scrubbers, adding other filtering processes or more water if necessary. Effluent is neutralized and heavy metals are precipitated under alkaline conditions as they flow through several settling basins before rising to the surface. The sludge from the settling basins is deposited 940 m underground. NAD takes part in a nationwide Responsible Care programme.
