Service and support meeting the cyberspace challenge

Making data available outside the ship brings many benefits. Service can then be carried out remotely. Upgrading system functionality and getting access to data for follow-up at the office also become easier and analysis of incidents can be commenced only...

Inevitable development

The digital world is here to stay, and the marine sector is no exception. Automation is already present in many areas, simplifying daily work processes and improving security in emergencies. In fact, digitalization took off many years ago, for example, with the introduction of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS).

One driving force towards automation and digitalization is a more competitive global market, forcing shipping operators to work more efficiently. Another is the lack of qualified staff, resulting in fewer people having to do more. Sharing data between sea and land opens up for new ways of working, where people on board can get remote assistance.

New rules underway

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will formalize cybersecurity requirements in Chapter IX of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Starting on January 1st, 2021, companies within the shipping industry will have to incorporate cybersecurity into their Safety Management Systems (SMS). The shipowners will be responsible for making sure that they fulfil the cybersecurity requirements, meaning that they will have to work closely with their equipment suppliers.

Already available

Consilium has been developing remote services for years, for example, remote access to share data from ship to shore and remote diagnostics to support systems on board from a distance. We can provide you with data from our fire and gas detection systems, VDR systems as well as emission monitoring systems, via our Cloudbox, to practically any device you want.

Cybersecurity is a complex area and every customer situation is unique. Starting now means that you will be ready when the new rules become a reality. You get the chance to run your ships more efficiently. Particularly important if you work with customers demanding just-in-time deliveries, where quick access to data makes a huge difference.
