The authorities are in the process of hiring two powerful tugboats which will be stationed in Finnmark from the fall.
This is one of the Government’s measures in preparing to handle an emergency, in case large oil tankers would get into trouble off the coast of Finnmark.
An increasing number of large Russian tankers are sailing along the Norwegian coast, loaded with crude oil from the oil fields in Northern Russia for the world markets.
Up to now, there has been no tugs stationed in Northern Norway capable of handling such large vessels.
-It is my ambition that these tugs will be operative before the heavy fall storms begin, says Fisheries Minister Svein Ludvigsen.
