Throughout the fall 2009 the Norwegian Business paper Dagens Næringsliv in cooperation with, DnB Nor and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, nominates the “Gaselle” of each county in Norway. These businesses are an important part of the Norwegian business scene and they represent an area characterized by considerable excitement and interest.
The criteria to become a “Gaselle” company are as follows:
• Delivered approved financial statements
• At least doubled the turnover during the last four years
• Turnover to be of at least 1 million NOK the first year of business
• Positive operating result all years of business
• Avoid negative growth
• Have been a Private Limited Company
This year the “Gaselle” award for Hordaland County was awarded to Norwegian Deck Machinery (NDM), located at Os, 30 minutes south of Bergen. NDM delivers deck machinery to all types of ships from offshore vessels to tug boats, tankers and bulk carriers.
“We are very proud to have received this award “states NDM’s Sales Manager, Rebecca Lerch Dahl. “Our expertise covers winch design, manufacture, operation and service and we operate in a market with continually increasing demands and today it is rough times for this segment. The financial situation in the world is causing stagnation in the new building and for many companies this is devastating. We have been very lucky and so far we’ve only had two orders cancelled. The market in Norway is not very good at the moment but we hope that this will change. It may never get back to the all time high two years ago, but the hope is that the business will pick up again in such a way that the yards in Norway will be able to survive. This is an industry that is a big part of the Norwegian history and it would be very sad if they were to be shut down.”
In January 2008 NDM opened up a branch office in Shanghai, China. Arnt Eivind Søvre, NDM’s General Manager, says that the volume of orders in 2009 is from Chinese ship yards. “Getting our office in Shanghai operational before the financial crisis has been a very important part of the growth in our company. Even though there have been many cancellations also here, there is still a lot building going on. However, the Norwegian yards are still the ones that helped NDM to rice the capital to even start in China. Without these yards willingness to take a chance on a new deck machinery supplier NDM would not be here today, and for that we’re very grateful.”
The newly awarded “Gaselle” is optimistic regarding the future and will continue to do what they are good at; developing great products and perform excellent service; before, during and after sales.
