South Africa and Norway have a strong partnership within Education, Research and Development, Innovation and Business. Several Norwegian higher educational institutions have hosted students from South Africa and have likewise sent students on exchange to South Africa. A large number of high quality joint research and development projects have and are being implemented, as many as 86 under the three bilateral research cooperation programmes alone.
Innovation and business relations have also been high on the agenda in the bilateral relations between Norway and South Africa, and Innovation Norway has had an office in South Africa since 1999 headed by the Norwegian Embassy’s commercial counsellor.
A weakness in these long-standing bilateral relations has been that the academic and the commercial sectors have been working together to only a limited degree. Team Norway in South Africa consists of the Royal Norwegian Embassy (EMB), Innovation Norway (IN), the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU). Team Norway has decided to organise a South Africa – Norway Science week in South Africa to explore new possibilities, business opportunities and solutions within the maritime, marine and renewable energy sectors. The aim is to create a platform where partners from the research community, higher education and industry meet to learn from each other and discuss future projects.
The expected outcomes of the Science Week are as follows:
- Create an arena where representatives of the higher education and research communities in South Africa and Norway can meet with the respective business communities to stimulate technology transfer and develop new ideas into productive initiatives for the benefit of the economies of the two countries in order to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
- Explore new ways of collaboration between industry, research institutes and higher education institutions in the two countries in areas of common interest. Showcase how these can achieve the issues identified and agreed on in the Economic, Technological and Social Issues Working Group during the last HL Bilateral Consultations.
- Create a platform for increased cooperation within education, research and innovation. Increase the collaboration for entrepreneurship and trade between the two
