Smartphone usage in the world’s most populous region

Did you know that most of the world's population is located within a small part of Southeast Asia?

This remarkable fact was pointed out by a user of Reddit and fact checked up in a Washington Post blog. Within this circle, small in comparison to the size of the globe (and mostly water) but diverse in varieties of cultures, Opera Software had a quick look at the usage of Opera Mini web browser.

It turns out that the world’s most populous region is also one of the most diverse in smartphone usage. The region has some of the highest percentage of smartphones owners in the Opera Mini user base (in Japan and Korea, where more than 95% of Opera Mini users are on smartphones,) as well as some of the lowest in countries such as Bhutan.

The Opera Mini browser offers a proxy-based service that provides a better web-browsing experience on all types of mobile phones. By reducing the amount of data traveling through the operator’s network, time and money is saved for the user, as well as increasing capacity for operator networks. For April 2013, the consumer base of the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers was more than 246 million unique users of the service on a large variety of different mobile phones, globally.
