Overall, the project has used approximately 18,000 m3 of concrete, inlcuding access roads and the new tunnel built to connect the road over the Sandfjord. The challenge was to create a concrete that is light enough to take the weight as the cantilever bridge was cast into thin air.
SPECIAL RECIPE
Ølen Betong has delivered approximately 3500 m3 high strength lightweight concrete to the bridge.
– We spent long time creating the recipe, and a lot of sweat and almost tears were shed along the way. The weight of lightweight concrete is at 1.95 tonnes / m3. Normal concrete weighs around 2.40 tons / m3. To handle the weight we have used a low weight component called Stalite, from Baltimore. Around 2,500 tons Stalite was transported by boat to Ølensvåg, says technologist Solfrid Vevatne.
The light concrete from Ølen Betong was made for the Sandsfjord bridge, but it can also be used for other bridges with similar demands.
