Ängelholms Energi in Sweden is modernising and expanding its Åkerslund cogeneration plant in Ängelholm to attain increased capacity and higher environmental standards for the future. The two more than 20-year old district heating boilers are to be rebuilt without interrupting production.

Kvaerner Power has the contract for the first phase, which is scheduled for completion in November 2005. The second phase is included in the contract as an option and is to reach completion in December 2006.

The boilers are to be equipped with up-to-date fuel handling and combustion technologies that will provide optimum combustion, high operating reliability and reduced environmental impact. According to plant manager Kenneth Carlsson, one of the reasons for their choosing Kvaerner Power as the primary supplier is the advanced combustion technology and numerous good references Aker Kvaerner holds in this field.

Once fully completed, the capacity of the boilers will be 50% higher than today, and there will be extended possibilities when it comes to choosing various types of fuel, such as demolition wood. This will give Ängelholms Energi greater flexibility when it comes to the use of gas for the production of electric power and heat. By increasing the proportion of renewable biofuels, like peat, forest residue and recovered wood, emissions of carbon dioxide will be sharply reduced.

The rebuilt boiler will comply, by good margins, with the new and tougher environmental EU requirements. In addition to carbon dioxide levels, other emission levels will be reduced, ensuring a better environment.
