Major Supplier of Metals

Norway is a major global supplier of metals such as aluminium, magnesium and ferroalloys, and is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of primary aluminum.

Hydro Aluminum, a division of the Norwegian conglomerate Norsk Hydro, is the largest producer, followd by Elkem and Søral. Hydro Aluminum is a major European producer of aluminum semis, destined for construction, transport and packaging    end-user industries. Aluminum also used by companies such as Hydro Raufoss Automotive, Fundo and A-CMI in the production of automotive components sold worldwide. Norway is a leading producer of magnecium as well, and Hydro Magnesium is the world’s largest supplier.

Norway’s major producers of ferroalloys are Elkem and Fesil. Other producers are Eramet and Globe. Important products from the ferroalloys industry include ferrosilicon, ferromanganese and ferrochrome. These products are primarilyutilized ai input in the production of steel. The same firms also produce silicon metal which is supplied to the alluminum and chemical industries, as well as to the electronics industry for production of semiconductors. Elkem is leading producer on a world scale of both ferrosilicon and silicon metal.

Norway is also a producer of zinc, nicel, and chopper. Norwegian metal producers spend a concidertable amount on research and development. For example, advanced alloying techniques, electron microscopy and other forms of metallography have given manufacurers unprecedented control over strenght-to-weight ratio, toughness, corrosion resistance, conductivity and other properties.
