Four Norwegian proposals granted ERC funding

The decision regarding Advanced Grants will be announced at a later date.

Nicholas Worth from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant of EUR 1.9 million.Nicholas Worth from the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim has been awarded a Starting Grant of EUR 1.9 million (approx. NOK 18 million) for the project, “Breaking the paradigm: A new approach to understanding and controlling combustion instabilities.” His work focuses on the development of new flexible-fuel combustor solutions with low emissions.

Three advanced researchers

Three researchers have each been awarded ERC Consolidator Grants, which are oriented towards more established researchers. The recipients are Sven Wedemeyer and Bård Harstad from the University of Oslo (UiO), and Jorge Fernandes from Nord University in Bodø.

Sven Wedemeyer from the University of Oslo has been awarded a Consolidator Grant of EUR 2 million from the ERC.Sven Wedemeyer has been awarded EUR 2 million (approx. NOK 20 million) for the project, “ALMA – The key to the sun’s coronal heating problem”. Beginning in the autumn of 2016, he will head a research group studying the outer layers of the solar atmosphere.

Dr Wedermeyer works at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO.

Jorge Fernandes from Nord University has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant of EUR 2 million.Jorge Fernandes from Nord University has been awarded a Consolidator Grant of EUR 2 million (approx. NOK 20 million) for the aquaculture project, “Innovative epigenetic markers for fish domestication” which will examine the impact of environmental conditions on the expression of genetic information in fish.

Doctor Fernandes works at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture.

Economist secures second ERC funding award

Bård Harstad, University of Oslo, has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant of close to EUR 1.6 million.Bård Harstad has been awarded EUR 1.6 (approx. NOK 15 million) in funding over five years to conduct research on environmental economics through the project, “The economics and politics of conservation”. Dr Harstad held an ERC Starting Grant from 2012 to 2016.

Bård Harstad is an economist who works at the Department of Economics under the Faculty of Social Sciences at UiO.
