“The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate’s resource map shows that we are by no means finished extracting the remaining resources from the reservoirs. The longer a field has been in production, the more knowledge is needed to bring up the oil that is still in the ground.”
“This means there is a great need for research and realisation of findings ,” Mr Grini continues.
Representatives from industry, research institutions and government authorities will join him on the programme board (see fact box).
Thematic priority areas
Many of the activities slated for the PETROMAKS 2 programme build further on the previous programme, but the priorities have been clarified and five thematic priority areas have been defined, in keeping with the national technology strategy for the petroleum industry, the OG21 strategy (Oil & Gas in the 21st Century):
Thematic priority area 1: Energy efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies
Thematic priority area 2: Exploration and increased recovery
Thematic priority area 3: Cost-efficient drilling and intervention
Thematic priority area 4: Future technologies for production, processing and transport
Thematic priority area 5: Prevention of major accidents, work-related illnesses and injuries to personnel in the petroleum industry.
“The new programme will put more emphasis on additionality in industry, meaning that funding from the Research Council makes it possible to implement projects that otherwise would not get off the ground. We will also focus on cooperation between research and industry players,” says Mr Grini.
A preliminary work programme was drawn up this spring, and will be revised by the new programme board. The work programme is a long-term steering document that identifies the thematic priority areas and how these will be approached. The programme plan will serve as the basis for funding announcements under the programme.
The chair of the programme board encourages all users and other players to submit input and feedback on the work programme.
“We are mainly interested in the views of the leadership in the companies and institutions that have been invited to submit input, but we welcome feedback from individuals as well,” he says.
The deadline to submit input on the work programme is 14 November 2012.
