With cod supplies dwindling in the North Atlantic, seafood producers in Norway are increasingly turning to the possibility of raising more cod along with the salmon that’s been a staple of coastal aquacultural operations for years.
Fjord Marin, partially owned by seafood giant Fjord Seafood, has signaled plans to double its cod production this year. The company hopes to spawn 1.5 million cod a year by 2003.
Pan Fish in Ålesund also is investing in cod production. Pan Marine hopes to establish cod and halibut production near Dønna and in the coastal counties of Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal.
