Elkem ASA will invest NOK 64 million in increasing calcining capacity for electrode and ramming paste at Elkem Carbon Fiskaa in Kristiansand. Following this investment, there will be a total of 14 calcining furnaces at Fiskaa.

Elkem Carbon Fiskaa is the world’s largest production plant for electrode paste and ramming paste serving customers all over the world. The investment to increase capacity follows increased market share and demand for Elkem’s products.

“We see an increased demand from our customers, and we are continuing to increase our market share. By investing in a new calciner we are increasing our capacity to meet future needs. Elkem is a market leader, and we are continuously improving both our products and production processes. This investment will contribute to strengthening our competitiveness further”, says Senior Vice President of Elkem Carbon, Inge Grubben-Strømnes.

The project for the new calciner entails engineering, construction, installation, and commissioning of the new calciner, and is expected to be completed with the start-up of operations by April 2020.

“Successful electrode operations require electrode paste tailored to customer needs. As we celebrate the 100-year anniversary since the invention of the Søderberg electrode technology at Fiskaa in Kristiansand, I’m very pleased that we now are taking next steps to improve our customer’s production processes further by increasing our capacity”, says Odd Olsen, plant manager of Elkem Carbon Fiskaa.
