We're being mapped!

To obtain an updated knowledge base, a mapping of Norwegian and other research activities on Svalbard is to be being undertaken. This includes an overview of activities at research stations on and around the islands. The mapping of research activities on and around Svalbard will be a significant contribution together with an on-going research overview of Norwegian research on Svalbard.

The Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU) has been commissioned to carry out the mapping and compile an overview on behalf of the the Research Council of Norway. NIFU has extensive experience with this type of activity and is also responsible for national statistics and indicators for R&D and innovation.

This is not the first time. NIFU has mapped Norwegian research on Svalbard earlier, and last time was on indicators from 2010:

The Norwegian Office of the Auditor General of Norway - Riksrevisjonen – looked into the Norwegian investments in research infrastructure on Svalbard during the period 2006 – 2013:

"The current mapping of Norwegian and other research activities on and around Svalbard will be an important tool for further collaboration and coordination of research on Svalbard", says Kirsten Broch Mathisen, Chair of the Svalbard Science Forum. She also encourages the respondents to reply to the questioner and to seek assistance from the "owner" institute if necessary.

A questioner has been sent to the research stations at the research settlements on Svalbard with a deadline October 12.
