SECURITY: Navigating a lifeboat that hits the water surface in a free fall is a difficult thing. Smoke, fog, high sea and darkness are among other factors that make maneuvering a lifeboat even harder.

In a crisis situation every second counts and it is extremely important to get away from the danger zone as soon as possible. When an accident occurs, it is desired to quickly evacuate the area in a safe, yet rapid manner. However, up until now the lifeboats have not been equipped to help the pilot navigate away from the danger zone.

SHOWS THE DIRECTION
- Scanmatic has, in cooperation with Statoil and The Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF), designed an instrument which provides the pilot onboard a freefall lifeboat to navigate away from the danger zone and into a safe direction. Navigation Assistant System (NAS) is an instrument for visual guidance of safe direction to navigate away from a damaged ship or platform says R&D Engineer Øyvind Kolnes. NAS is activated the moment the lifeboat is experiencing a free fall, and NAS will immediately start giving the pilot information. An organized display with arrows and lights will lead the lifeboat away from the danger zone and into safety.

NOW BEING INSTALLED
- NAS is one of many Scanmatic made Turn-Key solutions, which is specialized for rough and demanding areas. NAS is also equipped with a Black Box application. It logs six DOF-angles and accelerations with 100 Hz for one hour from the point of evacuation. The logged file is stored in a memory and can be downloaded to a PC via a USB-interface for analysis, explains the R&D Engineer. Installation of a NAS-system can be done when the lifeboat is being produced, but it can easily be retrofitted as well. This is done simply by four bolts, says Kolnes.
