Strengthens Marine Research Cooperation

Norway and Portugal have signed an agreement that will strengthen their cooperation in marine research.

Norwegian-Portugese agreement signed On 4 May, the Norwegian and Portuguese Ministers of Fisheries and Education & Research and the national research councils met to sign the agreements that will secure close cooperation in marine research between the two nations. The agreements recognize the strategic importance the ocean has in relation to European growth and development.

Portugal is an important market for Norwegian export of cod and clip fish, but is also a significant fisheries nation. Now the Norwegian and Portuguese authorities will utilize the common interests in fisheries and aquaculture and develop research for their mutual benefit.

- Norway and Portugal are both amongst the biggest sea nations in Europe. This gives great opportunities, but also large responsibilities. A closer cooperation in research will strengthen our position both in fisheries and aquaculture, and within resources and marine environment, states the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries Elisabeth Aspaker.

The research agreement made between the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research and the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute was signed at an event at the Norwegian Seafood Center in Bergen as the Portuguese president Aníbal Cavaco Silva is visiting Norway.
