Standing Committee on Education and Research "impressed"

After visiting the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), The Committee travelled to Cape Town and spent much of the time visiting Norwegian/South African projects in the region.

These included two SANCOOP- projects, an ERAfrica project, all three financed in part through RCN and NRF/DST, and a project formerly financed by the bilateral cooperation programme that has since expanded, among other sources through a major FP7 grant.

The projects visited were:

  1. Development of an advanced high-efficient low-cost power-generation with minimum carbon emission from hybrid-fuel (Ad-Pow-Gen), an ERAfrica led by the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) in partnership with two other European institutions and two in Africa, including the University of Cape Town.
  2. Seasonal to decadal Changes Affecting Marine Productivity: an Interdisciplinary investigation, a SANCOOP cooperation project led by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen (NERSC) and the University of Cape Town/the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research, The visit included a visit to the "glider lab" that manages drones used for oceanographic surveillance
  3. Performance of PV modules in arid areas - effects of soiling and module technology on yearly yield, another SANCOOP project, which is led by the Institute for Energy Technology in Kjeller and Stellenbosch University.
  4.  EQUITABLE – Enabling Universal and Equitable Access to Healthcare for Vulnerable People in Resource Poor Settings in Africa, a EU-financed project with SINTEF Health in Oslo and Stellenbosch University which is built on a previous bilateral project during the first phase of bilateral research cooperation.

Particularly this last project is an example of the achievement of the principal objective in all three bilateral research cooperation programmes between South Africa and Norway, namely to establish long-term sustainable cooperation in science and technology between the two countries.
