Shrinking glaciers

Most glaciers in Norway are now smaller than they have been for several hundred years, according to surveys made by the Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE).

According to NVE, 19 out of 28 glaciers have shrunk, five are unchanged, while the monitoring showed an increase at only four glaciers.

The largest decrease in one year was measured at Bødalsbreen in Stryn, in the county of Sogn og Fjordaane, which was reduced by 69 metres.

Average withdrawal for 18 glaciers over the last 10 years is 149 metres, but the variation is great: from 400-600 metres in Jostedalen, to 60-100 metres in Jotunheimen.
