Servogear propulsion technology enable sustainable Arctic cruises

We are really happy to have Servogear on board,

Servogear AS

The energy efficient and silent hybrid electric vessel “Brim Explorer” will offer arctic tourists sustainable and spectacular cruises, powered by Servogear propulsion technology.

Servogear is awarded the propulsion contract for a sustainable sightseeing and whale watching vessel that will be built by Maritime Partner and owned by Green Wave Holding. “Brim Explorer” will be equipped with Servogear’s Ecoflow Propulsor™, including the new HDE220 hybrid gearbox. The system will allow seamless integration of renewable energy into the vessel’s power system.

 - It is a privilege to be chosen as a supplier by a demanding customer with the environment on the top of the agenda. Operating cruise vessels in vulnerable areas require low noise and low emissions solutions, which is what we achieve with the hybrid gearbox in combination with custom-made propeller and propeller tunnel, CEO of Servogear, Torleif Stokke, says.

Servogear’s hybrid delivery for the “Brim Explorer” comprises of the HDE220 hybrid gearbox, a 1400 mm propeller, propeller tunnel, effect rudder, shaft bracket, battery package from Grenland Energy and energy management system from Brunvoll Mar-El. The hull is designed by Wave Propulsion and the topside by Einar Hareide.

- We are really happy to have Servogear on board, one of the few suppliers that can deliver a complete energy system to such a vessel, from battery to propeller. Servogear provide an ideal technical solution with low weight to a competitive price, co-founder of Green Wave Holding, Espen Larsen-Hakkebo, explains.

 Launches in August 2019

The 24 meter “Brim Explorer” will have a capacity of 140 passengers. It will be operating north of the Arctic Circle along the coast of Norway from August 2019. The vessel will be exploring the spectacular Lofoten area during summer and offer whale safaris from Tromsø during winter. The hybrid vessel is one of the world’s most flexible vessels, as it can be charged at any port and operate on batteries for 10 hours with a cruising speed of 10 knots.

 - It will become the first sightseeing vessel to be equipped with Servogear’s brand new hybrid gearbox HDE220. We are happy that Green Wave Holding and Maritime Partner have confidence in our energy efficient and silent solutions, Torleif Stokke says.

 Sustainable tourism

The vessel will be built with large windows that take the passengers as close to nature and wild life as it gets, but with as little impact as possible.

 - Our goal is sustainable tourism, which means that we want our environmental footprint to be as small as possible. We want to cut emissions and operate without disturbing the wild life in or near the sea, Larsen-Hakkebo says.

Servogear recently provided the propulsion system for the world’s first electric fjord cruise vessel, Future of The Fjords, and is a part of a 11.7 Million EU-funded R&D project that will develop the world’s first all-electric fast ferry. Servogear and Green Wave Holding aim to continue developing green and modern sightseeing vessels together.

 - We have noticed Servogear’s engagement in the green transition. Operators always want to cut fuel costs, but when going electric, energy efficient propulsion becomes really important. It is all about reach. We needed a supplier with a holistic approach to the energy system to become energy efficient in every sense, Larsen-Hakkebo explains.
