Salmon lice effects marine survival

New study concludes that salmon lice effects the marine survival of salmon, but points to the complexity of estimating population level effects of the parasite.

A group of scientist from Norway and Canada has conducted a systematic review and statistical analysis on all Norwegian studies that has tried to quantify the effect of salmon lice on the marine survival of salmon the last two decades.

The report concludes that salmon lice effects the survival of salmon, but further demonstrates that the effect varies a lot between periods, areas and is also very strongly affected by the general marine survival.

The method that has been used to quantify the effect of lice on sea survival is to release two groups of salmon smolt simultaneously where one of the groups is treated with an anti-parastic agent.

The difference in recapture (measured as the risk ratio or RR) of the two groups as adults is taken as an indication of the effect of lice on salmon survival.
