Research Council recognises excellence in research, communication and innovation

The awards comprised one of the highlights of the event, which was held at Oslo Concert Hall on 19 September. Minister of Education and Research Kristin Halvorsen presented the awards.

The Award for Outstanding Research 2012 (Møbius Prize) to Professor Bjørn Jamtveit
A professor at the University of Oslo, Bjørn Jamtveit received the award for his pioneering, interdisciplinary research in geophysics and geology and for building an internationally leading research group.

In its statement, the jury pointed out that Professor Jamtveit has succeeded in integrating a variety of disciplines to form a new, promising, interdisciplinary field of research.

“He has succeeded in creating an exceptionally productive research centre – a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (SFF) in Physics of Geological Processes – and the centre’s results have garnered international attention.” The jury also attached importance to Professor Jamtveit’s skills in communicating research findings in an open, engaging way.

Bjørn Jamtveit was born in Notodden, Norway, in 1960. He received the Fridtjof Nansen Award for outstanding research in science and medicine in 2010, and recently became the first Norwegian to be elected fellow of the Geochemical Society.

Winners of the Award for Outstanding Research receive the sum of NOK 1 million, as well as the Møbius statuette, designed by Norwegian sculptor Aase Texmon Rygh.

The Innovation Award 2012 to Cambi and the City of Oslo
The company Cambi AS and the City of Oslo’s Waste-to-Energy Agency joined forces and applied research and systems thinking to establish a ground-breaking biogas plant. Biogas is upgraded to liquid biomethane (LBG) for use as fuel, and nutrients from food waste are converted to organic fertiliser.

“Their collaboration is an excellent example of customer-driven innovation in which the user perspective has played a prominent role. The innovation is the result of cooperation between players in the private and public sectors. The prize-winners employ an innovation concept that encompasses much more than product innovation on its own: new technology forms the basis for systems innovation,” stated the head of the jury, Ms Ingvild Myhre.
The Innovation Award comprises a cash prize of NOK 500 000.

The Award for Excellence in Communication of Science 2012 to Professor Nils Christian Stenseth
Nils Christian Stenseth is a professor of ecology and evolution at the Department of Biology at the University of Oslo. He is also chair of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES), which is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (SFF). Professor Nils Christian Stenseth Professor Nils Christian Stenseth Professor Stenseth is one of Norway’s most widely profiled and highly cited researchers internationally, and is ranked among Europe’s top five most highly cited ecologists (in zoology).

Professor Stenseth has an extensive production of popular science publications to his name. “Throughout his entire career as a researcher he has been extremely active in communicating his research findings and has deliberately made use of a variety of dissemination channels,” stated the jury. “He succeeds in explaining complex issues in a simplified, yet concise and clear manner. Professor Stenseth is a socially committed communicator who captivates an audience that extends far beyond the boundaries of his field.”

The Award for Excellence in Communication of Science comprises a cash prize of NOK 250 000.
