Regional research initiative for North Norway to continue

“We are very pleased to see this initiative continuing; it is an important component of the Research Strategy for the Arctic and Northern Areas,” states Anne Kjersti Fahlvik, Executive Director of the Research Council's Division for Innovation.

“The NORDSATSING research initiative is a long-term initiative to strengthen and further develop the competency of research groups that are working together with local trade and industry,” she explains.

“The initiative has produced good results so far,” confirms Ms Fahlvik, who believes the NORDSATSING initiative can serve as a model for other regional initiatives under the auspices of the Research Council.

Building upon results

The NORDSATSING initiative was launched in 2009 with an eight-year timeframe, to be evaluated after five years. The Government has decided to follow the Research Council’s recommendation to continue the initiative for the full eight-year period.

“Among other things we will be establishing educational programmes and research groups based on the research carried out so far,” says Lars Erik Krogh, coordinator of the regional research funds at the Research Council. “With that a complete infrastructure will be in place.”

“There are many examples of how the research carried out thus far has already benefitted the business sector,” he adds.

Research cooperation with industrial partners

The NORDSATSING initiative encompasses six research projects. Two of the project partners from industry are Det Norske Veritas and petroleum company ENI. Many regional companies within industry and tourism and hospitality are involved as well. Research environments carrying out the projects include the University of Nordland/BI Norwegian Business School, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the research institute Norut Alta, the Nordland Research Institute, Narvik University College, the Norwegian Polar Institute, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment and Luleå University of Technology.

The NORDSATSING initiative is funded by the Ministry of Local Government and Modernisation. The original proposal for the research initiative came from the Government. The Research Council has further defined the initiative’s targets and assesses the projects to ensure high-calibre research.
