Record-setting allocation for research on global health

Particular importance has been attached to thematic areas such as health care systems and maternal and child health.

Børge Brende Norway has world-class research groups specialising in maternal and child health, says Børge Brende. “Each year 1.5 million children under the age of five die of diseases that would be preventable if these children had access to vaccines,” says Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende. Mr Brende stresses that Norway has world-class research groups specialising in maternal and child health, which together with international partners can make a real difference.

Largest health-related allocation

The allocation under the Programme on Global Health and Vaccination Research (GLOBVAC) is the largest ever for a health-related programme at the Research Council. The programme is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

Worldwide, only a small portion of health research expenditures focus on health problems in developing countries.

“We have wanted to strengthen support to this research field for a long time,” says Arvid Hallén, Director General of the Research Council. “This research deals with large-scale, global challenges where Norway can play an important role."
