Record sales after Russian boycott

7th of August marked the beginning of the halt in Russian import of Norwegian seafood. 5 weeks later, the salmon export is reaching record levels.

Norwegian seafood exporters were concerned when Russia decided to boycott import of Norwegian food items just last month. But they are experiencing an increased interest from Europe.

Since the boycott was introduced, export of fresh salmon has increased by 3 % compared to last year. Bjørn-Erik Stabell, market director at the Norwegian Seafood Council, says there is a great need for salmon in the market and the latest numbers only confirm this. New countries are taking over the Russian share without hesitation.

- Exporters have shown great resilience and turned things around quickly. Especially Spain and Germany have been importing large quantities of salmon the last couple of weeks, says Stabell.

Russia is the biggest importer of Norwegian herring, but the trade route for this particular fish has been shut down throughout the year due to changes in the animal health regulations in Russia. Pelagia, the largest supplier of Norwegian herring, says they are therefore not experiencing major changes in trade due to the recent boycott. However, they believe they will find new markets for their fish as long as they are willing to make price adjustments.

Despite the Russian boycott, the total seafood export from Norway increased with NOK 146 mill compared to the same time of year in 2013.
