Opera's global ambition

Opera Software's free Internet browser has made waves world-wide, stealing market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer and AOL's Netscape Navigator. The company said it now has a goal of serving 5 million users by the end of 2001, a level that could bring the Norwegian company some USD 34 million (NOK 300 million) in revenue, mostly from banner advertisements. Opera founder Jon S. von Tetzchner said such an income stream remains highly theoretical, but he added: "The potential is huge." The Opera browser's strengths are that it is fast, requires little memory and functions on a variety of platforms. Some 1.5 million people now use it.
