NOV expands water services with exclusive desalination pact with OASYS Water

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has augmented its comprehensive water services portfolio with the signing of an exclusive licensing agreement for the multi-patented Oasys Water Membrane Brine Concentrator (MBC) 4000 system, a membrane-based desalination technology designed to convert E&P waste water into potable quality water.

The uniquely engineered MBC system employs proprietary and patented forward osmosis (FO) technology to desalinate frac flowback and produced water, allowing for reuse in drilling and completion activities or discharged on surface in areas with limited disposal options.

The global agreement with the Massachusetts desalination provider gives NOV exclusive global licensing for the treatment systems for use in the upstream oil and gas sector. The first MBC4000 system as part of this agreement is expected to be available next summer.

The easily scalable technology has a designed treatment capacity of up to 4,000 barrels/day. Holder of 22 issued patents and more than 180 pending patent applications, the portable MBC4000 system is the first membrane-based solution capable of treating water with as much as 15% salt concentration. The state-of-the-art system uses patented semi-permeable membrane technology designed to desalinate salt brine at three times the maximum capability of conventional reverse osmosis (RO) systems. The system produces pure water and reusable brine at over 200,000 ppm, while using half the energy required of many thermal evaporative systems and within a 30% smaller footprint. In addition, the companion Oasys ClearFlo™ pretreatment system can be used alone or in conjunction with the MBC4000 to remove scaling ions prior to the final treatment.
