Norwegians: a generous folk

Norwegians are second in the world, behind only the Swedes, in the number of volunteer hours they devote to good causes, according to a study of 30 countries by the international Johns Hopkins Comparative Non-Profit Sector Project.

The Norwegians contribute an average of one work week each year to volunteer causes. Nor are they laggards when it comes to personal financial contributions. On Sunday alone, in an annual door-to-door fundraising action, Norwegians gave about USD 16 million (NOK 150 million) to SOS Barnebyer, a charity serving poor children abroad. That's an average of USD 10 (NOK 95) per household.
