Norwegian company NOFI, based in Tromsø, with its NOFI Current Buster ® 6, has won 2nd place in the prestigious competition Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE, USA.

The US company Elastec/American Marine, an Illinois firm, the winner of the $1 million grand prize for developing a more efficient skimmer technology to sop up petroleum spills.

The second-place $300,000 award went to a Norwegian company called NOFI that has built a boom that collects oil and then separtes it from the water.

The judges decided not to award a third-place prize, concluding that none of the eight other finalists met that criteria after the teams put their entries through real-world testing.

The Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE is a $1.4 million competition designed to inspire a new generation of innovative solutions that will speed the pace of cleaning up seawater surface oil resulting from spillage from ocean platforms, tankers, and other sources.
