Norway softening import barrier

Under pressure from the European Commission, Norway appears willing to approve lower tolls on the import of certain processed agricultural products from the European Union, according to Aftenposten.

Last year Norway went along with a 3-percent cut in its customs duty on a wide variety of agricultural products. Now, thanks in part to complaints from Sweden, the European Commission has requested additional duty reductions of up to 50 percent on exports to Norway of baby food, soups, margarine and breakfast cereal. According to the newspaper, Norway has not formally replied yet but is resigned to some degree of duty reductions on those goods - perhaps in the 10 to 20 percent range.
