Norway has a new Minister of Education and Research

Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, Norway’s new Minister of Education and Research, will be placing higher priority on the internationalisation of research. In particular, he will promote more academic cooperation with the US and increased Norwegian participation under the new EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020.

In addition to this issue’s profile of Mr Røe Isaksen, readers can also find out how an innovative project is improving safety at rail level crossings. The company WaveTrain Systems is steaming ahead worldwide with its new solution, which employs advanced sensor technology to warn people when a train is approaching a crossing. The system is reliable, simple to install and very cost-effective.

More project news: The research project Valuing Norwegian wool has documented that wool production in Norway is more environmentally sound than in other countries. Also, the Research Council of Norway is adopting an “idea laboratory” (Idélab) method to generate groundbreaking projects in the interface between subject areas and disciplines.

This project was presented previously in an English-language article.
