Norway concerned over civilian victims in the Gaza conflict

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide says Norway is concerned over the increasing losses of civilians and the reports of destruction from Gaza and Southern Israel after days of violence.

- The escalation of violence is disturbing, and a further stepping up could have serious consequences. All parties now carry a great responsibility for ensuring a quickest possible end to the warfare, Eide says.

- We ask Israeli authorites to show responsibility. While we recognice Israel's right to self defence, we also point to the fact that Israel, as a state is by international law, is sbound to limit its countermeasures to what may be seen as acts of defence, Eide says.

The Norwegian Foreign MInister also says that he repeats that the rocket attacks against Israel are totally unacceptable, and must stop forthwith.

Eide says the Norwegian government has on Friday contacted both sides in the conflict and called for an immediate halt in the fighting, and to enter into a lasting cease fire.
