Norsafe with New Free-Fall Lifeboat Record

Norsafe set a new world record when a free-fall lifeboat was released from 40 meters height with ten people onboard, Thursday 25 June. There has never before been released a lifeboat from such a height with so many people on board.

40 meter Free-Fall

Norsafe set a new world record when a free-fall lifeboat was released from 40 meters height with ten people onboard, Thursday 25 June. It has never before been released a lifeboat from such a height with so many people on board.

"The feeling of plunging straight into the sea was amazing. It was even more exciting to know that no one has attempted this before, "says Michael Røssland leader of Norsafe Academy. The crew was also surprised of how little they felt the 40 meter fall and how soft the landing was.

"We knew in advance, based on previous testing, that no risks were attached to the experiment," says Røssland.

The boat GES50 MKIII, which can accommodate 70 people, was used for the trial. This is one of Norsafe’s largest and most advanced freefall lifeboats. Norsafe has previously set a world record for highest unmanned plunge from 66.8 meters using their largest freefall lifeboat GES 52.

Norsafe’s newly opened training center in Rosendal, Norway makes these plunges possible. The new diving tower for freefall boats has a height of 60 meters and can be used to implement plunges for as much as 40 meters with personnel. Most commonly it performs dives from 19 meters height during training and exercise.

A Complete Supplier of Maritime Security

Norsafe is a world leading supplier and service provider of safety equipment for the shipping and offshore market. Recently the company was approved certification as a course provider by NOROG and the Norwegian maritime authorities, in accordance with the STCW Code. Dir. Geir Skaala states that this certification puts Norsafe in the position of a complete provider of maritime safety.

"We are currently the only lifeboat provider that offers manufacturing, service and certifying courses. It is a milestone for us to establish Norsafe Academy in Rosendal, in the heart of Norwegian oil and gas industry, with the North Sea’s tallest diving tower. ", states a proud Geir Skaala.

At the new training center for lifeboats in Rosendal, course participants receive training employing the very latest equipment, which is identical to what they experience in the workplace. Crews on ships and platforms must complete a refresher course in safety every five years for the certificates to be valid. Norsafe Academy is also based in Greece and offers a similar training there.
