NOK 400 million for industrial research

The Programme for User-Driven Research Based Innovation (BIA), the Research Council of Norway’s key competitive arena for industry, has allocated a total of NOK 400 million over four years to 45 innovation projects in Norwegian companies.

  • The BIA programme is one of the largest programmes at the Research Council and is a key partner for Norwegian trade and industry.
  • Funding under the BIA programme comprises the only source of Research Council funding for innovation projects for 50 % of the overall R&D investments by companies in Norway
  • The BIA programme provides funding for R&D projects that have their basis in the companies’ own strategies.

“Many exciting and important innovation projects have been realised with funding support from the BIA programme,” explains Anne Kjersti Fahlvik, Executive Director of the Division for Innovation. 

“Being awarded funding under the BIA programme at the Research Council attests to a project’s quality, and can in turn trigger funding from private investors. At the same time, companies have an opportunity to expand their competencies through cooperation with external research groups, for example,” she adds.

The projects extend across many different fields, ranging from the process industry, building and construction and wholesale and retail sectors to ICT and biomedicine.

Very high quality

All in all, 97 grant proposals seeking a total of NOK 790 million were submitted by the deadline of 13 February. Over 70 per cent of the applications received a mark of “Very good” or “Excellent”.

“The quality of the grant applications submitted to the BIA programme has risen steadily. We could easily have allocated another NOK 100 million to highly-qualified projects if we had the budgetary framework to do so,” stated Ms Fahlvik.

The next call for proposals for funding for Innovation Projects for the Industrial Sector under the BIA programme will have a deadline of 16 October 2013.
