New museum of modern art opens in Oslo

The new premises of the privately owned Astrup Fearnley museum for Modern Art  on the Oslo waterfront will be officcially opened by Queen Sonja today, Thursday.

Around 300 journalists from around the world have already arrived for the grand opening of the striking building.

The brand new museum located at the city pier - Tjuvholmen - will be opened to the public on Saturday.

The museum, which is a part of a newly developed Tjuvholmen area of Oslo, rests at the edge of the pier, not far from the City Hall. The museum opens with an exhibition named "To Be With Art is All We Ask," which is a selection of pieces from the Fearnley collection.

The Astrup Fearnley museum has been designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, who also designed London's Shard, the tallest completed building in Europe. The museum will be part of shaping the Tjuvholmen district, which is a former shipyard that has quickly emerged as an up-and-coming center for architecture, design, art and food.

The cost of the museum is approximately NOK 650 million, and consists of a curved glass roof covering two buildings: One for visiting exhibitions, while the other is for the museum's permanent collection, which includes works by Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Charles Ray and Cindy Sherman.

Saturday's launch is open to the public from noon until 8 p.m., and the ticket office will sell regular tickets. If you do wish to have a sneak peak, however, join the museum's art club, and get access to a pre-opening starting at 10 a.m.
