More money for the science centres

In a Norwegian context, a science centre is a popular scientific recreation and learning centre for mathematics, natural science and technology where children and adults alike can learn by conducting experiments themselves.

Merethe Frøyland Merethe Frøyland “After many years of modest growth despite a rise in the number of science centres, we are pleased that these centres have finally been given a boost in the national budget,” says Merethe Frøyland, head of the programme board of the VITEN programme for science centres under the Research Council, which administers the funding to the science centres allocated by the Ministry of Education and Research.

Enhancing recruitment to science

Lifelong learning, interactive dissemination and recruitment play a key role in the focus of the science centres. The centres provide an important platform for encouraging children and adolescents to learn more about mathematics, natural science and technology and to enhance recruitment to these subject areas.

“In addition, the science centres have expertise in interactive teaching and can be an important resource and partner for the schools in the teaching of mathematics, natural science and technology,” says Ms Frøyland.

The following eight science centres are encompassed by the VITEN programme and are eligible to seek public funding for their operations:
