More jobs in Oslo

Oslo and Akershus have never created this many new jobs, and the job market will continue to grow in 2012, according to prognosis by the Norwegian Labor and Welfare Administration (NAV).

jobs in osloThe need for workers in Oslo and surrounding areas continues to grow, in spite of financial worry south of the border. The new jobs mainly go to foreign workers, especially in the capital, NAV predicts.

The building and construction industry can expect to see the biggest percentage increase of new jobs. But other industries can also expect a significant rise, including property management, health services, and retail.

With an expected unemployment rate of 3,3 percent this year, the Norwegian job market continues to attract workers. It is expected to reach 3,4 percent in 2012.

“The reason why the unemployment rate doesn’t decrease in spite of more job creation is because of the growth in population, which also results in a growing work force,” says Tom Daniel Ø. Sunde, County Director in NAV Oslo.

NAV estimates that two out of three new jobs go to foreign workers. However, that doesn’t mean that they take the positions away from Norwegians. “Without foreign workers we would have never experienced the growth that we do now,” Sunde tells Aftenposten.
