Minister of Foreign Affairs asks the international community for help in the Martine-case

Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide (Labor Party/Ap) hopes that other countries will help catch murder suspect Farouk Abdulhak if he is observed outside of Yemen. The minister was questioned about the progress of the Martine case on Tuesday by Åse Michaelsen, the Progress Party's member in the Justice Committee.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) has had a continuous and good dialogue with British authorities. This will be continued," Eide tells Aftenposten. "Norwegian foreign services are in regular contact with British representatives, also throughout this fall," he explains.

Martine Vik Magnussen (23) was a student at Regent's College in London when she was found dead on March 16, 2008, in an exclusive apartment complex where Abdulhak lived. She was last seen leaving a night club with the murder suspect, who was a fellow student. Abdulhak flew to Yemen on March 15.

British police has accused Abdulhak for the rape and murder of Magnussen, but the U.K. has no extradition agreement with Yemen, and the country has refused to send him back voluntarily.

Eide informs that they have notified countries in the regions surrounding Yemen to make sure that they have been given the information from Interpol, and know that the suspect is wanted for murder.

In a meeting between Eide and his colleague in Yemen, Abu-Bakr Al-Qirbi, in October, Eide says that he highlighted that both Norwegian and British authorities are still working to have Abdulhak tried for a British court.

"We had a good conversation about this, and he is familiar with our point of view," Eide says to Aftenposten).
