Maritime meetings in Brazil

Brazil is one of the most important international markets for the Norwegian maritime industry. Norwegian officials have been in maritime meetings during a visit to the country this week.

Brazil is one of the countries with the highest amount of Norwegian companies outside Europe. About 150 Norwegian companies have operations in Brazil. Most are in the maritime sector and oil and gas.

The Norwegian State Secretary Dilek Ayhan met the Norwegian shipping community in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian Association of Norwegian Shipowners (Abran) is the NSA's overseas office in Brazil, and currently comprises 15 member shipping companies. Challenges and Opportunities in the Brazilian market were discussed.

Maritime matters were once again on the agenda in Brasilia, both in the economic commission and in the meeting with Deputy Minister of Transport, Edson Giroto. Undersecretary Ayhan was introduced to the president of the Brazilian maritime administration, Fernando Jose de Padua Costa Fonseca.

Efforts to establish a bilateral maritime agreement between Norway and Brazil, as well as maritime expertise and educational cooperation were highlighted in both meetings. The second negotiation meeting on bilateral shipping agreement between Norway and Brazil was held in conjunction with the State Secretary's visit.

Brazil is currently the second most important market for Norwegian shipping outside the EU, with over 3,300 calls in 2014. About 20 per cent of offshore vessels for offshore Brazil are Norwegian.
