Marine Science conference in Bergen

More than 600 marine scientists from around the world are this week participating in the 2012 ICES Annual Science Conference which is held in Bergen, Norway.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) coordinates and promotes marine research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and on living marine resources in the North Atlantic. Members of the ICES community now include all coastal states bordering the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. ICES cooperates with organizations and institutes on an international scale.

ICES Annual Science Conference provides a forum in which an international community of marine scientists, professionals, stakeholders, and students gather to share their work.

The Institute of Marine Research is located in Bergen. With a staff of almost 700 it is Norway's largest centre of marine science.

The main task of the Institute (IMR) is to provide advice to Norwegian authorities on aquaculture and the ecosystems of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the North Sea and the Norwegian coastal zone.

While IMR's headquaters are in Bergen, important activities are also carried out at IMR's department in Tromsø, at the research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen and on board our research vessels, which are at sea for a total of 1600 days a year. The aim of research and management advice provided by IMR is to ensure that Norway's marine resources are harvested in a sustainable way.
