Loading Record at Mongstad

Statoil's port at Mongstad, north of Bergen, set a new record in its number of vessel calls and the volume of crude oil and refined products shipped out last year. There were 2,195 ship calls in 2000, compared with 1,930 the year before, according to Kjell Magnus Heggertveit, port captain. A total of 435 million barrels of crude and almost 11 million tonnes of products were shipped from the jetties. This represents increases of 48 million barrels and 900,000 tonnes respectively. These figures confirm Mongstad's position as Norway's biggest port and Europe's second largest oil port after Rotterdam, in tonnage terms. Last year was the first whole year in which crude was loaded ship-to-ship, after this method was adopted in autumn 1999. There were 25 loadings of this type in 2000.
