Heavy inflow of foreign workers

The number of European workers who immigrate to Norway to find a job has increased with 26,400 in only one year.

The 11 percent increase in foreign workers from Europe is significant, says head of research at Fafo, Jon Rognstad. He believes that the number of immigration workers will continue to rise.

On June 1, a total of 262,000 tax cards have been issued to citizens from the EU and EEA countries.

"Norway's economical situation stands out from the rest of Europe. People keep in contact with those who work in Norway, and hear that this is a good place where it is possible to find a job. It is also close to home," Rognstad explains.

According to figures released by the Norwegian tax commission, mostly Swedish and Polish people come to Norway to work, followed by Danes and Lithuanians.

The Spanish are further down on the list, with only 2,245 issued tax cards. Still, that's an increase of 400 compared to last summer.
