Fjellstrand WindServer among the 13 shortlisted concepts of the Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator Access Competition

Fjellstrand is proud to announce that theFjellstrand Windserveris among the 13 shortlisted concepts (from a total of 450) of the Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator Access Competition. The competition aimed to identify and develop new access systems to dramatically improve the availability of turbines and the safety of people during the transfer to turbines. The Offshore Wind Accelerator Access research area aims to challenge the traditional approach to transferring personnel and equipment from vessels to turbines for carrying out operations and maintenance (O&M) activities. This will become increasingly important as wind farms are developed further from shore in harsher sea conditions.

The competition has shortlisted the following designs in three categories (the Fjellstrand Windserver is in the “vessel” category):

Vessels - Vessels for transporting personnel and equipment from bases or mother ships to turbines, incorporating a transfer system.

Transfer systems – To transfer personnel and equipment from vessel to turbine, potentially with motion-compensation

Launch and recovery systems - Systems fitted to the permanent bases or mother ships for launching and recovering daughter craft from the sea.

“By employing experience from numerous high speed light crafts, advanced motion damping systems and offshore special vessels, Fjellstrand is in a unique position to develop fuel-efficient, stable and robust offshore vessels suitable for the next generation of offshore wind farms.”We highly appreciate the support from Carbon Trust, which confirms that our knowledge is valuedin this booming industry.  Nils Aadland, Fjellstrand Managing Director

Fjellstrand WindServer
The Fjellstrand WindServer’s innovative hull design allows very fuel-efficient travel within the wind farm, but unlike other fuel-efficient vessels, the slender waterlines and unique bow ensures minimised motion at high speeds as well as during low speed manoeuvring in the wind farm.

A strong benefit of this hull concept is that it consists of permanently integrated motion damping devices that are not allowed to move or be controlled in any way. This ensures a robust and easy to handle vessel without the investment and maintenance cost of active motion control systems.

Fjellstrand’sdevelopment has focused on the actual hull design rather than a specific size and arrangement. The funding from Carbon Trust will be used to further optimise and evaluate the conceptas well as adapt the arrangement to fit the operational requirements for the next generation offshore wind farms.

The generous deck space made possible by the hull’s ample load capacity gives high flexibility for thesuperstructure arrangement and can fit practically transfer system.

Fjellstrand has a strong history of successful cutting-edge concept development and has already launched a range of offshore trimaran vessels suitable forchallengingsea conditions.
