ENERGY NORTH - the new force for business

The North’s leading organisation for energy and engineering business has changed its name from NSIG to ENERGY NORTH as part of a strategic rebrand and expansion of activities.

ENERGY NORTH will be a new single voice for all energy related issues across the Highlands, Islands and North East, pulling supply chain, developers, operators and utility companies together to benefit all parts of current and emerging energy markets and helping all parts of the industry in the area to interact, building an understanding of the requirements of each.

The organisation will also be more vocal in political and media circles, ensuring that developments and interests are highlighted, and that the North of Scotland and Islands will compete with other areas of the UK.

ENERGY NORTH will improve benefits for members, and is currently producing an area-specific energy information database for their exclusive use. The database will be a single source for all relevant information on oil and gas activities on the west coast of Scotland and will provide relevant renewable energy information in the area for wave, tidal, offshore and onshore wind, hydro and biomass interests.

ENERGY NORTH will also be spearheading major promotional activities during 2011 and beyond, and is currently in the final stages of planning for some of these.

All current activities and benefits of NSIG membership will continue, such as events and trade missions, addressing skills issues through the Energy & Engineering Skills Forum which it chairs, organising local focus groups, an improved website and providing a members’ directory.

ENERGY NORTH was chosen as the most appropriate new name in a poll of the 130 plus member organisations. Associated with the name change will be a new logo.

In line with the name change, the organisation, which has traditionally focused predominantly on the renewable and oil and gas sectors, will also look to include the hydro and biomass industries among its membership, and aims to work more closely with developers on major projects within the region.

ENERGY NORTH chief executive Ian Couper said: “It was clear to us that the time was right for change. Although NSIG has grown considerably over the last three or four years as a force on behalf of members and the economy of the North of Scotland and Islands, the name really no longer sufficiently described our activities or membership.

“We also believe at this time we need to step up a level again in raising the profile of energy and energy-related businesses in the area among politicians and decision makers. The new name - ENERGY NORTH - meets all our requirements.”
