E-book sale has increased to NOK 19,4 million

So far this year, the sale of e-books in Norway has increased by four compared to 2011. However, the sale still only constitutes a small share of the total sale.

After a challenging start, technical issues and disagreements about price, it seems like the sale of e-books in Norway has finally experienced a boost.

An increasing number of titles have been released electronically, and Norwegian publishers have sold e-books for a total of NOK 19,4 million so far in 2012, compared to NOK 4,6 million in the same period last year. The numbers have been released by the Norwegian Publishers Association (DnF), and represent sales between January and October.

"We see a sharp increase in sales, which is also what we expected," says director of the DnF Kristenn Einarsson. "This is the year when we've really started t invest in e-books," he explains to NRK.

The three main publishers also report an increase. "Our sale of e-books has increased by ten since last fall," says Information Chief Bjarne Buset in Gyldendal to NRK. He says that it seems like the sale of e-books has finally had a breakthrough.

The industry expects that 75 percent of new books will also be published both electronically and in print this year. However, the sale of e-books, when you look at the total sale of fiction non-fiction, still only constitutes 0,6 percent of the total sale.

"Everything is in place: A large selection of titles, lower prices, and improved technical solutions. The only thing the sale depends on now is Norwegians' willingness to move from print to e-books," says Einarsson.
