CSM RA - "New" regulation in the railway sector

Are YOU in the railway business? Have YOU heard of Common Safety Methods on Risk Assessment (CSM RA)? Confused?

Differences in the assessment and acceptance of changes in the railway system have been obstacles to cross border operations and approval of railway products in the different European countries. In 2010 ERA (European railway Agency) introduced the Common Safety Methods on Risk Assessment (CSM RA).  The CSM RA gives a harmonized framework for the risk assessment process through the prescription of Hazard Identification, Risk Analysis and Risk Evaluation. From 1st of July 2012 this regulation comes into force to its full extent, i.e. for all changes in the railway system (technical, operational and organizational changes).

Scandpower offers services in every aspect of the CSM RA like:

  • Training (management, safety managers/staff)

  • Help in implementing CSM RA

    • What is CSM RA and how does it affect Your organization?

    • How to implement CSM RA into your existing Safety Management System

  • Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) services

Scandpower has taken active part in the development of the CSM requirement and we are working in close relationship with the authorities in Norway, Sweden and Denmark on the implementation of CSM. Training of the Scandinavian Authorities is part of these activities. Scandpower's CSM projects are carried out for operators of both infrastructure and rolling stock. Scandpower as part of Lloyd's Register is also involved in CSM work in UK and in the Netherlands.
