COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) (COST)

COST er et kontaktformidlende og koordinerende organ med ansvar for å initiere og gjennomføre europeisk forskningssamarbeid. Norge har deltatt siden samarbeidet ble etablert i 1971. Gjennom COST dannes vitenskapelige nettverk som gir forskere anledning til å samarbeide innen et vidt spekter av forskningsaktiviteter.

Aktivitetene i COST støttes med bevilgning fra EUs rammeprogram for forskning, Horisont 2020, og for rammeprogrammets varighet er samlet støtte på ca. 300 mill. euro. COST gir støtte til nettverksaktiviteter som workshops, konferanser, korttids forskningsopphold, publisering og evalueringer. Forskningen finansieres nasjonalt. Initiativet til samarbeidsprosjekter i COST, kalt aksjoner, etableres på grunnlag av forslag fra forskerne selv, og det er ingen tematiske begrensninger. Dette gjør det mulig å opprette nettverkssamarbeid innenfor nye områder hvor det ikke er igangsatt tematiske satsinger.

Det er norske deltakere i omtrent 250 nettverk (aksjoner). Hvert nettverk har en styringskomite, hvor alle land som deltar kan ha inntil 2 medlemmer (Management Comittee - MC). Det avholdes to-tre møter i året i hver av disse komiteene.
