Cod fishing better than ever

Fishing fleets off Northern Norway are suddenly hauling in enormous amounts of torsk (cod), not least around Senja. They say the fishing has been “exceptional,” and capacity is bursting at terminals on shore.

“There’s no point saying this is like fishing used to be in the good old days,” Arthur Jacobsen told fishing industry newspaper FiskeribladetFiskaren after returning to Senja from a highly successful fishing trip. “This is better.”

The 68-year-old fisherman has lived and worked off Senja his entire life, and says he can barely believe his eyes when his crew hauls in the nets. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he told FiskeribladetFiskaren.

He and others say the cod are attracted by and feeding off equally enormous streams of herring in the waters from Lofoten up to Senja. “It’s simply been incredible fishing,” Rita Karlsen of the traditional fish receiving station Brødrene Karlsen at Husøy, told news bureau NTB.

She said she had to close the terminal for a day-and-a-half this week, to process the fish that already had arrived before they could handle any more. The two receiving stations at Senjahopen have taken in 700 tons of cod during the past 11 days, along with 3,000 tons of herring.
