CO2 Technology Centre opened

On Friday the Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen opened the Administration Complex of Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM), in Nord-Hordaland, Western Norway.

TCM is the the world’s largest facility for testing and improving CO2 capture technologies.

-Our efforts at Technology Centre at Mongstad is a vital part of the Government’s energy and climate policy. The opening of the Administration Complex today shows that the construction of the Technology Centre is going as scheduled, and that we are one step closer to testing the actual CCS-technology, says the Minister of Petroleum and Energy.

Technology Centre Mongstad will be 63.000 square meters and can capture capture 100.000 tons of CO2/year. TCM will test two technologies that are currently available, the amine-based (Aker Clean Carbon) and the chilled ammonia-based (Alstom) technologies.

The Norwegian Government’s plans for carbon capture and storage (CCS) are based on the fight against climate change and the challenges of supplying the world’s energy demand. Through knowledge and experience from national projects, the Norwegian Government has ambitions for Norway as a leading country in the development and deployment of CCS.
