Biology, medicine and health sciences undergoing evaluation

Seven panels of international specialists are convening in Oslo to evaluate the Norwegian research communities in biology, medicine and health sciences.

The evaluation currently underway is the largest in the history of the Research Council. The process extends to research environments at universities, university colleges, regional health trusts and independent research institutes.

The panels will be evaluating scientific merit as well as the organisation and management of, strategic basis for, and international orientation of research activities within the research institutions.

Shaping future priorities
The Research Council carries out evaluations in key areas of Norwegian research activity at regular intervals. The last reviews of Norwegian health science research were conducted roughly ten years ago, in 2000 and 2003 respectively.

“The evaluation will give us an overview of the state-of-the-art in biology, medical and health science research in Norway today, and will help to shape the Research Council’s future priorities and initiatives in these areas,” says Director Hilde Jerkø of the Department for Medicine, Natural Science and Technology.

The evaluation reports are expected to be completed in the course of 2011.

Face to face evaluation
Each of the seven referee panels will meet directly with representatives of some 20 research units. In addition to meetings, the panels will assess production within the various units based on self-evaluations, factual information, CVs and analysis of bibliometrics.
